What compatibility are you looking for specifically? Publisher already creates {publisher:segment_N} variables.

Maybe that’s the problem: the {publisher:segment_N} variables work like ‘ordinary’ segment_N variables (no translation to default language of category_url_title)…

The publisher:segment variables should always contain the default language value of the current URL, so if you’re using translated URLs, the native segment_1 will return the translated value, publisher:segment_1 will return the default language value so you can use it in your templates reliably in conditionals and such.

My default language is Dutch, but when I use publisher:segment_N on French pages publisher:segment_N variables work like segment_N variables (returning the French segment/url_title). I checked the settings and everything seems okay..

Going to send you the 0.98.8 build to see if that clears it up. There was some stuff changed with this functionality.

Updating to 0.98.8 solves the problem for certain categories. I remade the categories that didn’t work, without succes

Can you provide more information? What certain categories does it work for and which ones does it not? What does the full URL look like? Screenshots?

Sounds like this was resolved via email. A stray, previously deleted, category group was causing issues. Will look into this so it doesn’t happen again.
