Ticket: Activating this extensions give a blank screen

Status Resolved
Add-on / Version Custom System Messages 2.5.2
Severity
EE Version 22.11.1

Description: After an update from 2.10.3 to 2.11.1 we had a blank/white screen. Deactivating extensions helped to get in to the CP.
Through deactivating extension one by one in the db we found CSM to be the one who blocked the system.
The site is running on 2.11.1 but we can not activate the extension - getting a blank screen again.

Did you turn up the debugging? https://gist.github.com/litzinger/5598641 Doing that should reveal the error message.

I’m having the same issue with 2.11.1. After enabling debugging I got:

Has anyone found a solution for this yet? I was getting support from Ellislab and they found that if you comment out line 174 in ext.system_message.php, it brings the site back up.

Commenting out line 174 will basically disable the entire functionality of CSM. Its the only way CSM works, and has worked for the last 6 years.

I started a new job this week and have not had time for support, so my apologies on the delay. I’ll try to sort this out soon.

Instead of commenting out line 174, try commenting out lines 154 through 157, e.g. this

if ( ! session_id())
        {
            session_start();
        }

Matthew, did you try removing that session_start() line?

I’m running 5.6.17. When I remove commenting on line 174 and then comment out lines 154-157 the site goes blank again.

It seems there was a change in EE 2.11 that caused this. CSM was using a method of extending/hijacking a core class to get this to work, which has been fine for the last 6+ years, but no longer works. If you really need to use CSM you’ll need to downgrade to 2.10. Otherwise I suggest just uninstalling it.

I’ll work with EllisLab so I can restore the functionality to CSM, however, I wouldn’t expect anything to happen in the next week or two.

Sorry for the troubles, but I’ll post updates here when I get them.

You can now download version 2.6 (it is packaged with the EE3 version 3.0.2). If you’re using EE 2.11, which is causing the problem, you will need to make a core hack. See the README file. This change will be in EE 2.12 so you only need to make this hack once.

Also, please note the Change Log:

[REMOVED] Unfortunately due to architectural changes in EE 2 and 3 CSM can no longer support the System Offline message override.
[Fixed EE2] Added support for new output_show_message hook. Requires EE 2.12+ or adding core hack to EE 2.11 (see the README file)
